Regardt van der Meulen

Regardt van der Meulen

Johannesburg-based artist Regardt van der Meulen creates fascinating steel sculptures of men that appear to be incomplete. Two of his figurative structures of fragmented men, titled Drip and Deconstructed, offer an intriguing look at the duality of the human figure. The sculptor says, "The human body with its strength and fragility lie at the core of this series of works, while exposing the illusion of safety in modern society.”
Despite a rigid shell, van der Meulen's figures are still somewhat transparent. In the literal sense, his sculpture are physically splintered. The bits of their forms that remain intact, though sturdy in their material makeup, do not compensate for the pieces that are missing, scarring the entity with holes. One could interpret this construction as a metaphor for not only the dichotomous power and vulnerability of one's physical body, but also one's emotional and mental state.

Sarah Knouse

Sarah Knouse

Artist Sarah Knouse created this fantastically surreal mixed media Flamingo Sculpture out of plastic, resin and wood. I think it looks amazing and tells such a story just by the way the materials create a dripping, swamp-like effect.

Nick van Woert

Nick van Woert

Nick van Woert's plaster bust with coloured plastic splattered in there faces.
I find these pieces exciting as some of them look like they are defying gravity as they would have been constucted on and made up side down.
I find the shapes that the materials make interesting; this has given me alot of ideas for my work.

The resin poured onto the bust as it was layed face down.

Evan Blackwell's Melted Straw Sculptures

Evan Blackwell’s Straw Sculptures

Staws heated, melted and fused together.
This goes on a little bit of a tangent from my project but it still links in with the idea of materials making there own journey and the material working themself.
The straws have reacted in the same way that the wax does when it melts and folds into itself.
I just think that the way the straws have melted into themselves is interesting

Painting with gravity

I couldn't find any information about the artist of this piece;
but I the technique is very simular to Holton Rowers work. It goes back to the idea of "painting with gravity."

Elizabeth Fonacier

I was looking at this artist for her melted barbie sculptures.
Its interesting the way that they hang and all join together and how all the colourts from the plastic run together and give a marbleing effect.

As a kid, the summertime tragedy of dropping newly scooped ice cream on the sweltering hot ground is comparable to few other horrors, except maybe this sculpture by the Glue Society. The melting ice cream truck is a sculpture titled Hot With The Chance of Late Storm that was unveiled at the 2006 Sculpture by the Sea in Sydney.

Doug Pedersen was inspired by a trip to a dollar store to create small-scaled sculptures using only items purchased from the store: toy animals and melted crayons.

An alternative way of distorting the line between a painting and a sculpture.
Its interesting how the painting carries on and steps out of the canvas and travels onto the floor.
